‘You can’t stay here,’ said the badger, tucking into his dinner.
‘Just for a minute,’ said the hedgehog, panting, ‘then I will be on my way.’
‘It’s not safe; I’m still hungry and I might eat you.’
‘That may be so, but it’s not much better outside. I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place with all these predators waiting to tear me limb from limb. And these spines only offer so much protection. I could roll myself into a ball, but what use is that inside the jaws of a crocodile? I’ll be a glorified toothpick.’
‘Okay, okay, stop feeling sorry for yourself. Perhaps you should have gone down the ‘attack is the best form of defence’ route; some sort of trigger mechanism that could shoot pins from that cushion of yours; inflict some serious damage as you scurry off into the undergrowth. You know, like the bird eating spider.”
‘Oh, don’t tell me she’s around too! I can’t believe it! Is this a nightmare? Pinch me; I must be dreaming!’
‘Well, if you insist. Keep still whilst I locate that soft underbelly of yours. Ah there it is. This won’t hurt a bit…’
At that moment, there was a knock at the door and without waiting for an answer, the crocodile shuffled in.
‘Hi guys,’ it said. ‘What are you up to?’
‘It’s a mammal thing,’ said the badger.
‘That’s cold,’ said the crocodile. ‘I’ve been around a lot longer than you and I’ll be around long after you are dust in the earth. I have outlived the dinosaurs. I can move on land or in the water and best of all, I can stop cars in their tracks. Bet you wish you had that talent?’
‘I wish I did’, said the badger and the hedgehog in unison.
‘We walk in darkness,’ said the spider, who had been watching from the shadows. ‘We shall never meet.’
